Special FX programming tutorials

I''m wondering about including some special FX to the next version of my Platformer like burning objects etc. Where can I find tutorials about creating special effects in 2D ? I don''t mean using a Gfx prog but really appying them in realtime. Some examples I thought of are fading the screen in/out, some basic fast drawing algos(lines, circles,...), blurring, alpha transparency, beaming like in Star Trek, fire, magic effects etc. I need to make them any size and customizable so painted FXs wouldn''t work. cmdkeen

You can find lots of those articles here. But the best place, in my opinion, is www.hornet.org .. The site stopped in 1998 but their archive is still available. These articles are old btw, but the best ones out there if you want to learn those simple effects.
