Hey, I need to make an application with a gui that works in Win and Linux/Unix. I guess the only/better choice is Java, right? What tools/IDEs you recommend to create a gui app in java? huge thanks

You could try wxWidgets for C++ or wxPython for Python. There's also Mono for running .Net apps on platforms other than Windows.

All you need is java sdk and a text editor but I recommend a IDE like IntelliJ or eclipse (free).

so... the java sdk provides gui libs?

Indeed it does, it's called AWT/Swing and you'll it in java packages java.awt and javax.swing.

The Netbeans IDE has a drag and drop gui creator if you want to use that kind of stuff. Eclipse has a plugin for the same thing (I don't think it's very good though).
