SDL Input without Video?

My understanding was that I had to initialize the graphics, so that there was a window for it to associate the events with...

I'm going by this tutorial:

I even tried getting rid of SDL_SetVideoMode, but the app wouldn't respond any more after that...

You can use SDL's input without a SDL main surface, but you will have to have an application window (HWND) to use instead. Take a look at this page: Using SDL Input for how Ogre users use SDL input, but keep their Ogre window.
