I think that some tutorials like lesson 29 has another code for resetting the display settings. You can also try this hacked lesson 5:

I am not sure that it is because of your drivers. This seems to be a problem on many system.
what does ChangeDisplaySettings(NULL,0); do?
hmm... weird, that lesson5 works both ways. both the fake fullscreen and the real fullscreen. i''ll look into it.
