To LOD or not to LOD?

Say I want to release a game in 1,5-2 years. Do I really need to care about LODed meshes and terrain or just use some other things like D3D8 tesselation or else? Thanks in advance.

Don''t take my idea''s as straight fact, this is just my opinion.
Implementing LOD''s in a game engine is a brilliant idea because it will allow you expand on the detail when/if the average computer becomes faster.
