I looked at trees in Oblivion, circlestrafed them, and to my suprise, the leaves were groups of impostors. I want to create similar effect in my game, but quite frankly I don't know how to use textured quad for it to be always in defined place in 3d, and always facing towards the camera. Help please?

First of all, this is more of a math or graphics question than an OpenGL question, per se.

I don't know how Oblivion does it, but I would think the most obvious solution here would be axial billboarding. OpenGL won't do this for you; you'll have to construct the matrix yourself and submit it via glMultMatrix(). It's fairly straightforward though, and can be done with a few cross products.

If a google for 'axial billboard' doesn't turn up the info you need, post back and someone can probably help you. (It may also be the case that Oblivion uses some other technique, in which case maybe someone can point you in the correct direction.)
