i have been trying to get a build file in visual C++ express edition to use the windows.h header file, but it simply wont do it, even downloading other's build files that work supposedly on Visual C++ (non Express version) will work.. what is going on here???

You'll need to download the platform SDK for windows operating systems. It doesn't come with the express editions, so they'll only build .net apps by default. You can download it from the developers area of microsoft.com. There's also some tweaking you can do to the express edition config to enable the MFC/Windows application templates.
