Point sprites and Cg shaders

How should I get around to rendering point sprites? Can I still use the ARB_point_sprite extension, or will I need to render quads and use Cg to align the vertices? How do I calculate the point size based on distance? TIA

i would only recommend point_sprites if youre gonna render large eg >100,000 points, for smaller numbers i'ld just send quads (they dont have the issues associated with point sprites)

Let me be clear:
I was told by GOD to use point sprites and not quads. Can I use point sprites with Cg Shaders? If so, how can I set the point size?
