Great news! A highly skilled and motivated team has been formed to manage and further develop NeHe. Our first mission is to replace the old lessons (which will still be available for download) with new and improved versions that provide more in-depth explanations, cover material which may have previously been skimmed over or left out in more detail, and demonstrate good programming practices. New lessons will also be written, but for now the focus is on creating a solid foundation to build upon in the earlier lessons. We will intend to continue the tradition of focusing on OpenGL but will also cover related areas where appropriate. Finally, we will make sure our new lessons are as cross-platform and build-system-independent as possible to make it easier for those who may be using different tools. Achieving this should be much easier thanks to improved basecodes being written for the lessons. We are currently writing the first lessons and deciding important aspects like coding standards, as well as updating the back-end code of the website to make future updates a more streamlined process. If you have any more questions and/or suggestions feel free to ask on the forums or contact me directly. Cheers // BBB, PR-guy for NeHe.

Don't know, soon, when they are done, we are currently doing the first few and they could in theory be done in a week or two, though this depends on how many we want to include on the release day, then there is the whole web site bit of witch i know little about.

But do the old ones anyway, it will take some time for us to get them on-line, and when we do, i do think it would be a + to have done some of the old ones.
Also there is the fact that only a few ones will be available at day one, perhaps up to lesson 5-10(maybe more).

Sounds great, I've been waiting for this news. A question about the website, is it going to be changed into the GDNet layout/scheme, or is it going to be the same type of layout as now? If the latter, will my themes still be compatible, because I'm quite used to using my blue/white one on NeHe now :)

I think at first we want to leave the style of the webpage untouched, we only change the content.
And as lc_overlord said, ther wil be less then 10 lessons posted at the release day, because we nerly finished the basecode and the code for the first lessons... No explanations yet, so plase be patient and read the old ones.

I have a recommendation: include tutorials that incorporate the use of QT.

Awesome news, can't wait for the updates!

If you need any help with the website I would be happy to help, I do HTML/CSS/PHP/JS.

Suggestion: use as modern C++ as possible and cross-platform as possible: SDL, STL, C++ strings, etc. If you need external libraries (like image loading), use FreeImage. FreeImage works bettern (IMO) than any other.

Oh and one thing: The NeHe website:

"This Web Site Requires That Cookies Are Enabled In Your Browser!"

What are you trying to save on my computer?

"1280x1024 Recommended For Best Viewing!"

Really? Why? 1024x768 seems to work.

All good points, but.

1. yes we allready do use modern c++, strings, SDL and so on (and glut for some reason) for the new lessons.
2. the website is being redesigned, but to what degree i can't say for shure.

Sidenote:The cookies are only used for saving witch theme you are currently using, nothing evil, and yes 1024x768 works, i even think 800x600 will work, but the smaller the screen res the harder it is to read.

While I like the site as it is, I would like to know what happened to NeHe, the former administrator. Does he still work with OpenGL and/or have a website?

So the base code is being revamped?

Well I have a modified Linux/GLX base code as I had some problems with the original. I implemented a callback system with the key presses so the base didn't need to be touched. I also fixed the fullscreen implementation as artifacts occured and textures were lost.

So should I submit what I have or wait for the new base code and try to model after it?

You should wait a bit, the basecode is completly rewritten, object oriented and platform independent.
Thus it works a bit differently than before.
And it's not that great to have an obsolete port on day one.

well it's been almost 3 months since the annoucement, does't it realy take this long?
Sorry for the sarcasm, but with the pace like this we won't see anything new on the site, any news maybe, some new posts?

Keep your shirt on, with any luck a public beta test will begin today or tomorrow (at least this week), and from that it is not far.

Not a problem, personally I understand your concern and I'm sure everyone (the NeHe team included) would rather we were able to release content sooner.

However, we'd like to maintain the excellent standard that both NeHe and GameDev.Net have previously demonstrated and want to provide you with nothing short of the best material we can produce on the subject, and unfortunately that does take quite some time.

To give you an idea of what has been going on, we've had to organise the team of volunteers and have assigned roles to the members as appropriate and set up an internal development/review/release cycle to ensure our content is as ready for the public as possible. In addition, the volunteers have developed a new code-base from scratch, and have been working at a set of initial tutorials based on this new and improved code that is nearly ready for a beta release.

The back-end code of the site itself is being cleaned up (I believe this is nearly completed, although this is certainly not an official announcement to that effect), and while this won't produce any readily visible changes to users of the NeHe site it will make maintenance and future updates of the site significantly easier and could potentially lead to the easier development and deployment of further improvements in future.

Additional content and updates are coming, and we're sorry that we're unable to give more visible indications of this, but as someone with knowledge of what the development team is doing I'd ask to give them a little more patience; it's a slow process, but we'd rather take the extra time than give you an inferior product that doesn't live up to your expectations of the NeHe site.

Really great news.

I have a question concerning future site updates.
Is it possible (or will it be possible) to write an e-mail to, for example, updates@nehe.gamedev.net to be immediately informed about the fact that the updates (especially on the lessons) are up and ready to check out ?

IMO it would be great to see someday in my mailbox a message that says: "First 5 lessons are on the site!", and so on, because I would be really happy to see completly new, redesigned, more advanced lessons and code for them as soon as possible.

What do You think ?

So.....

You said a couple of days way back a month ago. I don't see any updates? Or is there a new link to the beta area?

tell you what... I'm concerned about the site right now not because I can benefit somthing from it, well... that too, but I remember back in a day I was probably one of the first persons to 'everyday-check' the site: read/write posts, learn from tutorials, write them and be concerned about Nehe's personal life, although I never met him either personally or over the phone/email. I just felt grateful someone put a pice of his life and heart in this work - alone.
Now it's a pity its like 3 monts since last news post.
Maybe I could help anyhow?

I agree.

If it was still the old school site, one/two people working on it, I wouldn't have said anything. But since recently a big deal has been made that a team is working on this, and the last update was 3+ months ago....

If you guys need help?

I am not dying or refreshing it every 2 seconds, but I was curious to see the new design and code layouts FWIW.

Personally, I find this most saddening. This is the first time I've come back to the site after NeHe departed (and the updates ceased). Finding the site in such a rundown state is such a shame.

I watched and learned a lot from this site from the very early days - way before NeHe's "viewing" figures went through the roof. I spent time working on numerous linux/solaris ports, helped Jeff (NeHe) with numerous problems and donated as much money as I could at the time.

To now find that GameDev.net has not made any effort to make updates/upgrades/anything to this site just makes me think that Jeff (NeHe) was given a bum deal too - or GameDev.net has sod all idea about finance/business.

Come on guys - updates, even minor ones would be most appreciated. Better still, beta access to what you are working on. Why not let some of us help you out! Not all of us are dumb-asses - some of us actually work with this technology every day. Some of us even work with cutting-edge web technology every day.

Need help? Just ask!!!

Don't hide - let us know. There's a great and supportive community out there that are now turning to other sources - don't lose us all and don't let us feel that this site is a complete dead duck :(

Chop Chop!!!

Well it's been a while since I visited the NeHe site, but I'm very upset now that I have. Like many here I used to read this site daily, working through the tutorials that appeared on regular and a crazy fast schedule, (how did Jeff manage that with everything going on?). But I've been caught up in my own project for quite a while, and to suddenly come back and see the site is such ruin :( Covered in adverts, no news for months, promised content that doesn't appear. Anyone know if NeHe has another site on the go? There seems no reason at all to come back here :((
