SDL

[lol]

Seriously, SDL is one of the most used for 2D games, but you don't give much info. What kind of games? 2D or 3D? What languange?

In any case, there isn't a "most recommended". There are several mature libraries out there each with its own flaw and cons. Just do your research and pick what you think suits you best, because this thread is probably doomed to degenerate into a series of posts where everyone(mostly beginners like you) recommends the API or engine he happens to use and declare it as "the best".

Yeah sorry I was kind of vague, uh I think I'm going to start with 2D games since I'm coming out of C++ but yeah 2D games that are not only platformers that I can make games like Defender also you know space side scroller shooters, games like pac man I guess and I want to know what is DirectX all about?

if you aren't adverse to buying a book (or if you don't like reading online stuff, like me because staring at the screen starts to hurt my eyes) you can get the book game programming all in one 2nd edition by jonathan s. harbour. it uses the allegro api to build 2d games. i won't say it is the greatest book ever, but it definitely gave me a pretty good start on how to move beyond what i had learned in school for c++.

but, as people will point out, there are plenty of online sources to read that are free.
