How to use DDX and DDY in CG?

In the book <The CG Tutorial>, I find CG provides two functions to caculate partial derivatives. But I don't know how to use it, because the document doesn't explain their usage, nor does it provide a sample code using the functions. Who knows this? Please tell me what is the parameter's data type and what is the return value and its data type. Sample code is most appreciated. Thanks in advance.
