Fundamental question on Meshes

I noticed that the Mesh.cylinder object is oriented by default along the Z-axis. One can absolutely turn it around, however, how do I make it appear by default along the Y-axis for example so that I do not have to bother with later turns. For example when rendering multiple colums in a room ... If it depends on how th .x file was created -then obviously - no can do :) But, then, could anyone point at some free objects like cylinders etc - hope to find one that does not need "maintenance" all the time. Many thanks in advance. So far your help has been tremendous.
