SDL console?

I am programming a Win32 SDL application in MS Visual C++ 6.0 (not my preferred environment, but I didn't have any choice). Right now the application displays graphics based on commands it receives from a server on another computer. I was wondering if it would be possible to create a version of the program for debugging purposes that could process commands that I typed into a console in real time, so that I didn't have to rely on the server to do testing. Is there an easy way to spawn a console window in SDL and listen for input? Any recommendations would be much appreciated.
