OpenGL 3D Games rendered with depth map in grayscale?

Hi! First of all: I literally know nothing about gfx-programming or in-depth gfx-stuff. So please be patient with my wording and knowledge. Heres my "problem": I wanna be able to render modern 3D games in grayscale based on the depth map. Is there any way (the more simple the better) to tell my graphics adapter just to give me grayscale depth map rendering? no polys, no lighting, noting. Just the depth information expressed through grayscale. Ideally, the game handling isn't touched at all. How could this be achieved? Are there existing solutions to this? How hard would it be to "code" something that tells my card to do so? Could the possibility to load a openGL custom shader of any help? I personally own a Radeon X1600Pro Card. openGL preferred, any help is heavily appreciated. Thx for your time, mos
