3d collision detection (ray intersection)

so iam having a little problem deciding how to handle collision with the enviroment. i wanted to create ray intersection with the polygons of the model. so i accessed the data of the vertex , and index buffers associated with the model , calcualted the normals of each triangle , then created the plane eqn , and stored the data in an array.when an object moves , i brute force throught the array to see if a point on the ray intersect a polygon , and i get on with contemplating a proper collision i need some openions ragarding the algorithm , and any sugestions . thnx. p.s : i know about bounding objects , but iam creating this for projectiles , and camera.
