Does Win32 or somewhere in MSVC++ compiler allow me to load excel files with a function call? Or is this a locked format? thanks

I think you would need an external library for that.
In C# however, this is childs-play :)

Lookup office automation objects. They are a set of COM objects explictly useful for working with the MSFT office suite.

First thing though, it is highly unlikely you can just 'open' an excel file. The file format is proprietary. What you are safest to do is open Excel itself, open the document, and then use the provided API to manipulate the document.

If you don't want the user to see Excel doing the dirty work you can set the program to be invisible, although it is of course impossible to prevent Excel from appearing in the process list.
