quake levels and walls

hello im sorta new to programming and i just learned how to make quads and triangles and put bmps on em.. i was curious if the walls in quake II were made just by simple shapes like that or were they made in a 3d program and imported.. sorry if this is in the wrong section :\

having to build entire maps triangle by triangle by typing it in code would be very hard to do, and make level design a nightmare for the artists(non programmers)

levels are Data, not hardcoded but instead loaded from a file,

usually created by a custom level editor software or imported and converted from some standard model format
maybe some combination
