Say there are freely moving and rotating OBBs in a 2D physics sim. Is there an additional early-out test more efficient (for performance) than the SAT tests on the 4 axes? I'm not considering the broad phase at this point, just a way to make an individual OBB vs OBB test more efficient, if possible.

I could suggest testing the earliest time of collision for the two objects (by taking their velocity and computing the time of first contact if they were moving one towards another), and early-out of the collision detection system if that time has not happened yet. Reset that time if the velocity of one of the two increases.
