I'm just curious, does a GUI, such as wxWidgets, run on top of a graphics API, like DirectX or SDL? Or is it it's own thing? It never says anything on the GUI's site. [Edited by - Uphoreum on August 12, 2006 9:30:30 PM]

It depends on the library, WxWidgets use the native windowing library it emulate the functionality missing (most likely with GDI on Win32). From the front page of wxwidgets.org
Quote:
Unlike other cross-platform toolkits, wxWidgets applications look and feel native. This is because wxWidgets uses the platform's own native controls rather than emulating them.

Some libraries use D3D or OGL (SDL internally uses D3D or OGL for graphics, and Win32 on Windows for creating the window) to emulate a GUI. Most GUIs for games (like CEGUI) use OGL or D3D because it need to be rendered on top of the games graphics, here Win32 wouldn't be sufficient for graphics, but it's still used for creating the actual window.
