quad on a background.

hello all. i'm building a quad with a texture. when i draw it on the screen, i see the texture with the texture background on the SCREEN background. there is a problem with that i saw that 1 solution is using a mask with 2 textures. isnt there another way of doing this? i heard somthing mybe about png that the texture with that can have no background. is that true? are there any more ways of seeing only what i want from the textures and not the texture background too?? thanks in advance i've just noticed i cant explain my self, but still mybe some ppl understanded. the mask i'm talking about is in nehe.gamedev.net tutorial number 20

Don't bother using another texture as a mask. Just use a texture with an alpha channel and alpha testing and/or blending. There's a lot of information if you google for those keywords.

EDIT: PNG is one image format that supports images with alpha channels. TGA is another, simpler, format.
