# [web] PHP 5 / IIS 6 strangeness blank pages?

I'm getting the wierdest behaviour. I'm migrating a moderate-sized PHP web application (86+ pages + 12 includes) from one IIS/PHP/MySQL server to another. Same software, same versions... I'm just moving from Development to Live. But I've also gone from the CGI to the ISAPI versions of PHP, for the better performance and security. This may or may not be the source of my problem... When IIS serves up most PHP scripts, I get a blank page. Zero-length return content. No error, and no errors appear in the logs. When I try to serve up a page that doesn't exist, I get a correct 404 error message. When I try to serve up a page I'm not allowed to view, I get a correct 401.3 message. But the PHP script that contains nothing but <?php php_info(); ?> works perfectly. All environment reported, all modules that should be installed, are, everything. But all other scripts give me nothing. Permissions for IUSR_ and IIS_WPG are configured right; read/exec/list on content folders, read/exec/list on C:\PHP and C:\PHP\ext. Web Service Extensions and ISAPI handlers are configured for the site as described by umpty-dozen tutorials out there. Any suggestions, help? Further info needed? php.ini follows...

Okay, we're narrowing. It only seems to happen when I include() another php script... include('non-existant.php') gives me an error message as appropriate, but adding include('../inc/std.php') before the call to php_info() in that test file (making the include and the call the entire contents of the file) gives me a blank page. Remove the include or make the include point to a file that doesn't exist, and it gives an error message before carrying on with the info page.

Still open for opinions, here, but I'm working on it.

Enable PHP error logging into a file, and enable error_reporting(E_ALL).

Then run it again and examine this file.

By default PHP will simply croak silently if a fatal error happens. By default there is no error logging mechanism (in IIS, certainly).

IIS and PHP is not a good combination, and a lot of problems generally occur.

I don't beleive it's a good combination either, but the only reason I wasn't forced to use MS-SQL instead of MySQL is because we couldn't get PHP to talk to it even on the development server.

I'd rather have gone with a LAMP setup, which I am fluent and strong in, and for which there is a far more experienced community, but the boss wants to go as far the Microsoft way as he can. Heck, we're not using ASP instead of PHP only because even the boss admits the language is ugly and difficult.

Further, relevant lines from php.ini; I already am configured as you say. "php-error.log" is empty.

I finally found it. It wasn't "includes", it was a specific include. There were some database connect statements at the bottom that weren't being logged because I had some proper error handling code around them, but the error handling code's reporting method was being blocked by PHP's error-reporting mask.

So, it's fixed now. Ladies and gents, check at your database code earlier. It'll save hair.
