Some one knows the maximum number of vertices/faces allowed in the ASE file format ( 3Ds max ASCII scene format ) ?

As far as i know, there's no limit.. i've been happily importing meshes that have hundred of thousands of vertices/triangles.

how do you link up submaterials to faces?
I found that the faces actually referenced material ids that did not exist?? Is there an equation to calculate the submaterial number?

cheers

No, if there are no materials specified, you may easily discard the material id, just use whatever default you have.
