I'm trying to create a link button after the user presses a button, then give that link button an ID based off of an expression inside a code render block. like this: <asp:LinkButton ID="LinkButton1" ButtonID="<% String s = "Edit_" + Container.ItemIndex.ToString(); Response.Write(s); %>" runat="server"> But I get the following error: Server tags cannot contain <%...%> constructs Is there anyway around this? I create several of these link buttons and I need a unique identifier for each one that I can access later.

I generally use single quotes around server-side property tags with some evalution functions in it. You might want to try it. Like this:

Width="80px" DataSource='<%#Eval("Boxes") %>' DataTextField="Text"

The other way is to just set it manually in your page_load....
