HLSL reference? or what?

so here i am... all i want to do is a simple bump map... nothing fancy no normal mapping stuff just a plain black and white bump map... anyway everywhere i look it sais to use shaders to get it done and list alot of cool prebuilt ones to use... where is the language reference for these shaders listing the commands and the options?... for example all the samplers i see list LINEAR as their function, there has to be more options than that. is there anything that even describes what these things do? anyway thanks for listening to me vent
