3D Game Layout

I'm interested in how everyone is making a 3D game. I just want to know the layout (what kind of things you have to go through in rendering, etc.) of the games. I'm wondering because I'm about to start a big 3D game project and I really don't want to get really deep into the code then notice that I forgot something and have to change all of it. Thanx for your help.
