If you look at existing Linux disc encryption systems, they typically use the "cryptoloop" driver in the kernel which can take a normal file and make it into a block device, adding transparent encryption (using one of the supported kernel ciphers, set up via a userspace program losetup or something). This is then mounted normally with a normal fs.

An alternative would be an encrypted filesystem rather than an encrypted block device (the block device is better in some ways because it also encrypts metadata, but is less flexible). To do this, you may want to look at the way existing crypto filesystems work.

If you're writing your own, the easiest way is probably to use the "FUSE" "filesystem in userspace" driver, which enables you to write your own fs without needing to write any kernel code.

I believe there may be a "block device in userspace" somewhere as well.

Good luck.

Mark
