fun is this thread LOL
In all seriousness, I view fun as when you do an activity on your own free will with gain not being the primary motivation.

Good luck on using that definition, though.

Holy hell, a rating of ZERO! That's freaking amazing! Hahah... life can be hell sometimes though...

Fun is about play, and play is ablut learning. So Fun is learning (in fact it is very difficult to learn something if you are not having fun while doing it).

Now what I mean by "Learning" is different to being "Taught" in schools. School is about giving you a lot of infomation and being asked to remember it. Learning is more about exploring how you can use that infomation, and one of the best ways is to play with it (hence learning is about play). To motivate us to play, evolution has given us the emotion "Fun", and because it is enjoyable, we keep playing.

So Fun is the motivation to learn. Weather this is Algebra, or the latest method of a Tank rush in an RTS, it is still all learning.
I'm going to have some fun picking on everyone's definition.

Pinball. Pinball is totally fun.

Well, except this definition.

Actually, its something to do with the two hemispheres of the brain working in sync, which is not usually the case.

When the scientific half works at the same level as the creative half? I think one can have fun while using either half exclusively. Painting while stoned, for example. [totally]

For me, ...

A dictionary book's definition can't read "well, personally, I think..". [smile]

Fun is making interesting choices and being rewarded for it.

I've had fun while making choices regardless of reaching the conclusion.

Fun is the temporary illusion that life on earth isnt hell.

Those of us who don't believe life is hell can still have fun.

I've had fun while doing activities with gain being the primary motivation. A casino is built around this concept.

So Fun is learning.

I'll use the painting while stoned example again.

But you are still learning to pain and express your self in that medium, so you are still learning...

Are you learning when you..

Push a ball?
Punch a bag?
Jump on a trampoline?
Run around for a home run?
Make fun of your sister?
Stomp your gas pedal to the floor?
Punch your boss?

Regardless, fun cannot be equal to learning because learning is not always fun. The same is true for any non-abstract process, such as experiencing, observing, and interacting.

I'm just messing around, though. I don't think it's possible to define fun.

So when women is hogtied on the floor, or on the bed and she is having a great fun...
Quote:Push a ball?

Yes. You are learning coordination.

Quote:Punch a bag?

Again, you are learning coordination and you physical capabilities.

Quote:Jump on a trampoline?

Again, coordination and physical capabilities

Quote:Run around for a home run?

Dito

Quote:Make fun of your sister?

Social skills (ie to be able to hold your own against those same kind of social attacks.

Quote:Stomp your gas pedal to the floor?

How to handle a car at high acceleration and speed.

Quote:Punch your boss?

How to: Win Friends and Influence People...

Yes I do understand you are also trying to be funny (same here), but in all seriousness, a lot of what we conssider "Fun" is all aobut learning. There are also other factors, and not all learning is about "Academic Learning" which can make the distinction a little unclear, but from what I have read on the psychology of fun and play, it is mainly about learning (if not all about learning).
