I am trying to setup my input buffer to set keys to being pressed by using the WM_CHAR and WM_KEYUP commands. However as soon as I hit the key the wm_keyup message is sent; never giving me the chance to let go of the key.
	case WM_CHAR:
		{
			static CDirectInput* pInput = pMain->GetInputWrapper();
			pInput->SetKeyDown((char)wparam);
		}
	case WM_KEYUP:
		{
			static CDirectInput* pInput = pMain->GetInputWrapper();
			pInput->SetKeyUp((char)wparam);
		}
		break;

You forgot the "break;" after WM_CHAR, so it's falling through.

It is always the small things my eyes never catch. Thank you very much, probably would have stared at that for hours before picking up on it.
