Voxel basics...

So... I've just started playing Outcast wich has an Voxel-based engine, the game is great and all that. I know what a voxel is; volume pixel... but how do you make an voxel engine? just the basics.
I want to be able to do other stuff than hieghtfields, i want REAL voxel!

(sorry bout the english...)
