I tried several different edge detecting algorithms and they produce a "spiky" edge. The 1st and 2nd derivative methods both gave me multiple edges w/in my target image instead of a single one encompasing my target image. My image is blurry and lacks consistency. Hence, the edge detector find multiple edges (edge w/in an edge) and creates a "spiky" out-line of my target image. I tried smoothing the image before appplying the edge detector. However, it just results in a better defined spikes. Is there a better edge detector out there? Or, should I apply an additional filter before calling my edge detector. Thanks.
