landscape editing

Recommended Posts

Do you know a good and free landscape editor like freeworld3d (can be found at www.freeworld3d.org)? It should support realtime heightfield generation by mouse interaction, including meshes from files exported by 3d-modellers, realtime preview etc. -rotalever

Nice list of editors but no one which is like freeworld3d is displayed. By the way: I'm interested which editors big game studios use. Or do they write their own one?

Companies usually roll their own tools, or use existing ones and modify them to fit their needs. But don't do the same because companies do it. Do it if the benefits outweight the costs, otherwise, choose a better alternative.

As for FreeWorld3D, if you can't find a free alternative that's good enough, why not buy it? 30 bucks isn't a lot, and it's far cheaper than building such a tool yourself - if your time is expensive to you, of course. :)

One alternative I can think up on is using an editor from an existing 3D RTS game. Maybe you even have some in your games collection, otherwise there might be a modding kit downloadable somewhere. Perhaps you can use one of these editors and build your own file convertor to make their output useable for your game.

Of course if it doesnt easily convert to your required data format (poor scripting for exporter) or worse it doesnt have all the features that your game mechanics make use of (ie- lighting effect even on big name commercial tools) then you might spend as much time trying to force someone elses product to do wht you need (and it might have been faster to write your own..... and have it do EXACTLY what you need).

Many games use alot more data in their terrain than the basic heightmap data....

If you have HL2/CS:S you could check out Valve's Hammer editor. I've recently become addicted to its terrain editing tools.

Probably wouldnt be too hard to convert the file-format to your own... However thats probably illegal if you do it for profit.
