Difference between sound play functions in Directx?

I was curious if someone could point out the difference between the two DirectX9 functions: IDirectSoundBuffer8::Play IDirectMusicPerformance8::PlaySegmentEx()

One seems to play a standard DirectSound buffer. The other plays a DirectMusic segment.

The DirectSound buffer is holding raw PCM data, while the segment is loaded with some sort of data (such as that microsoft midi wannabe format). Although, iirc, DirectMusic uses DirectSound behind-the-scenes anyways.
