Parallel game engines?

With all these new multicore processors coming out, I'm starting to wonder about the next evolution in game programming (or just general application programming). How do current OO languages help us make use of multicore systems, and how can modern computer games be designed to make use of multicore systems? And how can you scale a computer game to fit on both 2-processor systems and 8-processor systems, and beyond? It seems like a awful lot of waste (IMO) to not make use of more than just 1 processor, while the system offers n-processors. Any research, papers, articles or topics on this?
