Terrain Texturing

Hello, I am wondering how games such as White Night (PS3) or Assisins Creed texture their terrain. Texture splatting it can't be because of the details near the road, and tiles seems like a very old thing to use. One big base texture with some detail maps on top of it will probably also not be their solution, so the only possibility I can still think of would be MegaTexture kind of way to stream in parts of a texture from a single very big one (or just simply clipmapping). Any ideas ? Regards, Kenzo
