OpenGL off screen rendering

Hello, i want to make a render outside of the screen to save this later in a picture. The image that i want render is bigger than the screen resolution, and opengl doesn't permit me to make this correctly. In this moment i have tried to make the render in differents blocks, each block with a smallest resolution than screen, but this method is very bad i think, and the results are not good ever. Is there another way to make this task? It's possible to make a frame buffer object with a bigger size than the screen resolution to solve this problem or something like this? A lot of thanks...
