relief on a 2D hexagons-based

Hi ! I m working on a 2D hexagons-based tile map. This map is randomly generated with several areas (mountains, woods, deserts) We want to put some (random) relief on this areas which would depend on the ground. Any idea on how to simulate random relief using lightness and darkness from hexagon tiles ? This relief we want is only graphical and does not impact the game itself. Thanks ! Nicolas
