When converting an mp3 to wav to put on CD for listening in the car I lose a lot of sound quality - always sounds very muffled, currently use free version of wavpad to convert the sound file and Nero to burn onto CD - anyone any advice on how to improve sound quality?

You can also use FlexiMusic Wave Editor, but if you convert the Wav to Mp3 and back many times, with any software it looses quality.

I don't believe that most cars can play MP3s.

Also, Audacity is a nice, free program that can convert to/from Waves/MP3s/Ogg Vorbis. However, to convert to .mp3, it does require an extra download which is a bit of a hassle.

I think that Dom_152 meant that Nero is capable of converting MP3 to CD audio on the fly. This is effectively the same as converting to uncompressed PCM before burning, but it's one fewer thing to get wrong. If WavPad is being used to convert the MP3s to an 8bit 11.025kHz mono wav, it will sound awful. At least Nero is guaranteed to go through 16bit 44.1kHz, the sampling rate of CD audio.
