Before I re-invent the wheel: In games we have pages of options for settings - how do most people implement these ? I'm guessing using picking with pages of text with alpha blending to see the background picture ? cheers

Most systems implement a GUI of sorts with the usual controls: text fields, buttons, check buttons, etc. You can make this as complex or as simple as you like, but re-inventing the wheel shouldn't be necessary. JavaCoolDude made an excellent open-source GUI system a while ago. You could use that or base your design off it. I don't have the link to hand; search the forums for it. Or you could base your system on the way another system does it. Java Swing/AWT might be worth a look, as might Qt. Have a look how they implement things like GUI objects, and events. It'll give you some idea.
