Sprites

I am making my first game in a long time, and I am using SDL. What I want to know is if you have a sprite with lots of frames of animation, where do you store wht different frames? Do you have one giant SDL Surface that contains all the sprites and then use just pull them off that to the sprite surface that is blitted to the screen? Or just have a different surface for each frame of animation???

Generally, people use sprite sheets to save on memory and reduce any texture-switching penalties that might exist.

I'd start out working with separate texture files and then try to make a sheet later if the performance isn't up to snuff.
