Help needed for smooth terrain/water blending (with screenshots)

Hi, i'd like to hear some suggestions about common tecniques for terrain/water blending. If you take a look at the screenshot, you see how the water geometry (which is rather "poor" and consists of huge quads) screw intersection with terrain (see how the edge intersection is fuzzy and everything but smooth). Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

Use per-pixel alpha blending with alpha = 1 - distance_to_surface ?
