[web] water in actionscript

Well I'm trying to implement a basic water effect with actionscript. Something like Andre Michelle's, which links to this article. I would really like to implement it without a displacement map filter. I think a convolution filter should actually be all that's necessary. something simple, like 0 1 0 1 0 1 0 1 0 with a divisor of 2. You have two movie clips placed on top of one another. First you copy the top movie clip's BitmapData to the bottom clip's BitmapData, then apply the convolution to the top clip. The blendmode of the top should be "subtract," i believe? Currently I can't get anything remotely close to water. Any suggestions?
