Terrain Generation

I am getting ready to look at methods of generating terrain. I know that their are several ways to go about this so I was hoping someone could point me to an article or even a book that discusses several methods. I am going to start on a map editor for an rpg type game. I am not looking to do terrain generation in realtime in a game. I am instead looking to create a terrain as a staring point for my map. After generation it can then be edited by hand. Then the resulting mesh it self will need to be broken down into smaller parts and saved for ingame use. Thanks In Advance

This book (and code) is a very good starting point if you want to explore terrain generation.

It teaches you both the fundamentals and then goes very deep into the details of procedural generation.

Highly recommended.
