[web] Video storage, indexing, streaming

Recommended Posts

I'm not much of a web tech guy, so here goes... I'm curious if anyone can point me in a direction - I'm interested in supporting video uploading, storage, indexing, purchasing and streaming. Sorta like Youtube/GoogleVideo but it's specialized and targeted toward a particular niche. What backend software packages are popular for this (I found Windows Media Server...)? Does Youtube use a COTS system, or do things custom and toss them on a disk, or in a rdbms? How do they handle streaming the same file to an arbitrary number of users? What about the porn guys (I'm sure they consider this a "solved problem")? If anyone can point me at some books or other things for research, it'd be sweet. Cheers.

I don't know about streaming it most efficiently, but for the upload/conversion process you can use ffmpeg on the server. Toss all uploaded files to it and convert them to flash video. Then use flvtool2 to set the metadata (needed if you want to stream properly). You can use FlowPlayer as a front-end.

I tested it. It works. And it's all Free software, though you might need a bunch on non-free codecs to convert e.g. wmv's to flash video.
