ddraw bmps 16/15 bit

I heard that sometimes ( depends on hardware ) ddraw stores 16 bit bmps not
not really with 16 but with 15 (r: 5 g:5 b:5). Is that true?
Its not really DirectDraw that does that, rather the video card and driver. Some video cards prefer 15-bit color (555) over 16-bit color (565). In any case, never assume either, just read it in from DD.
