how to texture your main viewport/window

instead of just texture mapping objects, is it possible to texture map the 'root' window as well? for example to create grass, or sky, etc. i've read somehwere that it is possible but usually not done but i can't seem to find it anymore. had something to do with interfering with the window manager if you do that. but how else to do it ?
