Linking with libPNG

I'm having some trouble linking with libPNG. I've statically compiled the release LIB and I'm trying to link it into a project and I keep receiving linking errors that the following have already been defined in LIBCD.lib(*.obj): _strncpy, _malloc, _free. I'm assuming the conflict is coming from the windows library defined functions and the functions wanting to be defined/used by libPNG, but I'm somewhat at a loss for how to fix this with the MSVC2003 compiler/linker. Can someone clue me in on what I'm overlooking?
