What do you do when you run out of texture units?

On my video card I have four texture units available. Though I've used them all and I still want to make more texture passes. Is there anyting I can do besides using a shader to allow me to perform more texturing stages?

what card if its a glsl one then u can normally access at least 16 with shaders (vs only 4 with the fixed pipeline)
