Problem with converting of skin animaion

Hello! I have one problem with the skinned animation. More precisely I have a problem with correct converting skin mesh from 3DMax format to DirectX format(X-file). I used two methods: has tried conv3ds and has tried XSkinExp plugin. This both means did not work with my interpretation - can't create information about skin weights. And I cannot move parts of my character. In both cases there are no displaying errors when converting the information from one format to another format. I tried to convert standart MAX character examples - and I had the same result (no information about skin weights). Maybe somebody had the same problem? Maybe somebody knows how I can take right convertible character MAX file(s)? And the last - how can I wright to Jim Adams (the author of some books about programming games)? Thank You for any answer (for references too)!
