DirectX Drawing

Hi all, I've been agonizing over this question about about DirectX for some time now. When one calls a draw function, let's say for a line(line.draw), which object type does it draw to and where is this object located? My guess is that it would be located somewhere in the Device but of what type the object is eludes me(maybe some Surface or Texture?). The reason I ask is because I'm doing many line.draws for stationary lines and it would be much more efficient to draw the lines only once to, say a Surface, obtain and save that Surface, and then just give that Surface to the Device before the Device renders. The issue is that all of this is speculative, and probably wrong since I've tried a few things and none of them have worked. It would also help if anyone had a good website(other than MSDN) that has detailed info on what the members and functions of the Device do. Thanks in advance for your help.
