Depth Buffered with Alpha Reference

Iam looking for some good references or tutorial on how to use the Depth buffer with alpha references, Iam looking to use this to eliminate some of the transparency issues I will see with trees, foliage and such in my game. Anyone have some good links?, or even a book which speaks of this?. Thank you for your help.
